Tagasihoidlik noor Wong (Wei Tang) on Teise maailmasõja ajal põgenenud kodukülast Hong Kongi. Ülikoolis liitub ta patriootliku teatritrupiga ning neist saab kiiresti tihedalt kokkuhoidev sõprade grupp. Wongi jõulised esinemised ergutavad vaatajad vastupanule, kuid trupp väsib peagi oma tegevuse piiramisest lavaga. Neil tekib ohtlik ja julge plaan, mis muudab nende elu igaveseks. Plaani täideviimiseks võrgutab noor Wong mõjuka poliitikategelase härra Yee (Tony Leung Chiu Wai). Kuid nende suhe muutub nii õrnaks ja vahetuks, et tavaliselt ettevaatlik Yee isegi ei kahtlusta, et Wong pole üldse see, kellena ta esineb.
