Of all the daring ventures the rock band Ween has undertaken over the course of its career, recording a pure country album with legendary session musicians from Nashville was probably the most surprising.

Although their fans were already accustomed to albums characterized by a variety of eclectic stylistic shifts, sticking to a single genre for an entire album and abandoning their previous DIY recording methods was a major change that even some Ween fans had trouble accepting. Over time, however, “12 Golden Country Greats” has become an important and beloved part of the band’s history.

There was this great moment in the ’60s when everyone went to Nashville to record—whether it was Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, or others. “12 Golden Country Greats” is one of those records. No one was doing that in 1996—an alternative rock band going to Nashville to record an album at the legendary Bradley’s Barn.
