American Interior is a unique project that definitively establishes Gruff Rhys as a captivating storyteller. His telling of the incredible yet true story of John Edward dissolves the boundaries between songwriting, music, literature and film and technology to become a multi-sensory experience.

In 1792, at the age of 22, John Evans, a farmhand from Snowdonia in Wales, sets off on a journey to America to find out whether the stories told by his fellow countrymen are true and whether the Welsh-speaking Madogwy tribe still roams the Great Plains.

In the course of this extraordinary adventure, he wrestled with the largest reptiles ever sighted in the Mississippi, hunted bison with the Omaha tribe, defected to the Spanish forces, discovered imaginary volcanoes, annexed North Dakota from the British and designed the map that accompanied Lewis and Clark on their legendary expedition.

Over 200 years later, in the summer of 2012, Gruff Rhys, a distant relative of Relative of Evans, followed in the footsteps of the explorer and set out to retrace the route into the heart of the continent by means of an "investigative concert tour".
