A 3-CD compilation documenting the early days of the American country-rock movement. Featuring the genre’s most important artists: Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, and The Flying Burrito Brothers. The 48-page booklet includes numerous rare photos as well as background stories on the individual songs.

The American country-rock genre didn’t reach its commercial peak until the mid-1970s, when artists such as Linda Ronstadt and her former backing band, the Eagles, smoothed out the musical rough edges to achieve enormous mainstream success and inspire a whole host of like-minded singers and bands.

Nevertheless, there is a consensus that the genre’s creative zenith lay in the second half of the 1960s and the early 1970s. Back then, long-haired hippie rock musicians from California shed the dazzling plumage of psychedelia to embrace the musical traditions of Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry; they lived out their cowboy and outlaw fantasies from the Wild West while also embracing the counterculture’s desire to return to nature (“Get Back To The Garden”).

“Before The Gold Rush” traces the history of the North American country-rock scene—from the pioneering work of established greats like Rick Nelson, the Everly Brothers, and Jerry Lee Lewis, all the way to a new wave of proto-Americana acts—ranging from the Flying Burrito Brothers and Poco to bands like The Band and Little Feat, who were known for their diverse musical crossovers.

With four hours of music and 76 tracks, “Before The Gold Rush” offers a fascinating insight into some of the best and most enduring sounds to emerge from what is arguably the most turbulent era in rock music.
