The album is completely acoustic and dedicated to John Lee Hooker with the line: "In Memory of John Lee Hooker. You will be missed."

Buddy Guy, who is not known for his acoustic work, makes a rare foray into album-length folk-blues on Blues Singer. The guitarist gets down to business, recording 12 tracks that sound like they were recorded after hours in his living room or on his front porch.

Guy's stinging leads are still evident, as is his soulful voice, but both are less flamboyant in the unplugged setting. Accompanied by a spare stand-up bass and brushed drums, Guy sounds almost supernatural on covers of Skip James ("Hard Time Killing Floor"), Johnny Shines ("Moanin' and Groanin'"), Son House ("Louise McGhee") and John Lee Hooker ("Sally Mae"). It's an understated, low-key affair made for long nights, rainy days and the saddest of moods.

Buddy Guy is just as compelling here, if not more so, than on his electric albums, making "Blues Singer" one of the bravest and most poignant albums in his catalog.
