De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High” captures the group at a pivotal turning point: older, more astute, and absolutely in their element.

Released in 1996, it was their fourth full-length album and their first without Prince Paul. It paved the way for a harder, more stripped-down sound, shaped in part by the young J Dilla on the title track. This first single became one of De La Soul’s defining statements and reached No. 53 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while the album peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

But numbers tell only part of the story—“Stakes Is High” remains an essential listening experience even today because it shows how De La Soul confronted the times head-on in the mid-’90s with wit, frustration, and a deep artistic self-confidence.
