A reaction to the prog and glam of the early 1970s, the back-to-basics sound of British pub rock was rooted in the rock'n'roll and R&B of earlier decades, and few bands embodied it as powerfully as Dr. Feelgood.

The Essex quartet already had years of live experience when they went into the studio with producer Vic Maile to record "Down By The Jetty", and it shows in the twelve tracks that precede the concert recording "Bony Moronie"/"Tequila" at the end of this debut. Guitarist Wilko Johnson wrote several great original songs for this album, including "She Does It Right" and "Roxette", and frontman Lee Brilleaux's bluesy vocals round off the whole thing.

"Down By The Jetty", which inspired bands such as The Jam, Boomtown Rats and Blondie, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
