Trumpeter Eddie Gale (1941–2020), a native of Brooklyn, New York, first made a name for himself in the mid-1960s through recordings with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Cecil Taylor, and Larry Young. On his impressive Blue Note debut album, *Ghetto Music* (1968), he seamlessly blended his own avant-garde approach with gospel, soul, blues, and influences from African music. He continued along these lines a year later on his second Blue Note album, *Black Rhythm Happening*, which, like its predecessor, he recorded with his nine-piece band and the eight-member vocal ensemble The Noble Gale Singers. In a review of the album, the U.S. jazz magazine *DownBeat* wrote at the time: “The future of jazz depends on musicians like [Eddie] Gale, who expand the genre’s vocabulary.”
