Hopeful, defiant, exuberant, and euphoric: “Radio!! Radio!!” is the 20th album by Erasure, one of pop music’s most beloved songwriting duos.

On the album, Andy Bell and Vince Clarke consistently build upon the musical pop framework they’ve been developing for 40 years, adding even greater depth to it. The ten songs deal with love, loss, and injustice, and thus poignantly strike a chord with our times, in which empathy is so often lacking.

It is a deeply personal album, shaped by a period of profound grief. When the duo met to write the new songs, it was just as much about helping an old friend get back on his feet as it was about their collaborative work. This warmth and mutual care are audibly woven like a common thread throughout the entire album.

The album channels the dazzling grandeur of the duo’s best work into a deliberately more personal and reflective style of songwriting. Bell admits that, after a 40-year career, it might be easier for him and Clarke to simply carry on on autopilot. But would that still be Erasure? “It’s like a shared brain between two people, and everything we’ve experienced flows into it,” he says. “We feel a certain responsibility. We could never make something trivial.”

“Radio!! Radio!!” is firmly rooted in Erasure’s unmistakable synth-pop soundscape, yet expands upon it with several key elements: While working on the album’s sound, Clarke felt an unusually strong pull toward the piano and also the acoustic guitar. The use of these instruments lends the sound added drama and depth, while at the same time leaving enough room for the crystal-clear synth-pop that made Erasure famous.
