With Schubert: Treasures, Rudolf Buchbinder devotes himself to a repertoire that has accompanied him since his childhood: Franz Schubert's piano dances. As one of the formative pianists of our time ("a pianist of great authority and stylistic integrity" - Gramophone), he approaches these works with the depth and sovereignty of a long artistic journey.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Buchbinder has recorded all of the composer's dance cycles published during his lifetime, thus focusing attention on an often underestimated group of works. Created in the context of the early 19th century, these waltzes, ländler and ecossaises reflect Vienna's entertainment culture and at the same time go beyond it. A second level of thoughtfulness and melancholy unfolds beneath their often light and dance-like surface. Buchbinder makes precisely this fine balance between lightness and compositional complexity audible. "Schubert's dances - just like his songs - are miniature worlds with gigantic hearts," says Rudolf Buchbinder.
