On his second Blue Note album "Goin' Up" in November 1960, 22-year-old Freddie Hubbard fulfilled the promise he had made just five months earlier on his debut "Open Sesame". The album underlined once again that he was one of the most exciting new trumpeters on the jazz scene in the early 1960s. The then 22-year-old not only shone with outstanding solos in the energetic hard bop numbers of the repertoire, but also proved his lyrical qualities in the exquisite ballad "I Wish I Knew". The fact that the youngster was able to line up the excellent quintet that accompanied him with renowned musicians who otherwise played with Miles Davis and John Coltrane reveals a lot about the young Hubbard's class.
