In the 1950s, baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan recorded an excellent series of albums featuring him playing with other saxophonists - sometimes with legends, sometimes with contemporaries.
One of the best and most surprising albums in this series is the meeting with Duke Ellington soloist and alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, which took place in 1959. In a review of the album for the BBC in 2003, Peter Marsh wrote that "West Coast coolness and East Coast hipness collide in a fascinating way".
