The multi-award-winning action-adventure game God of War was first released in 2005, but became such a hit so quickly that Santa Monica Studio developed seven more versions of the game. The latest version, released in 2018 for the PlayStation 4, focuses on the journey of the main character Kratos in the Greek world along with his son Atreus, who embarks on a quest for revenge for being tricked into killing his family by the Olympian gods.

The official soundtrack won a BAFTA Award and was composed by Bear McCreary. It is based on themes he created around the main characters of the game. Inspired by the folk music of the Vikings, McCreary used exotic instruments and languages from various Northern European folk traditions.
