Although the Texas-born tenor saxophonist Curtis Amy (1927-2002) accompanied greats such as Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell and Smokey Robinson in the 1960s, was the musical director of Ray Charles' band for three years and played a solo on a Doors album, he remained largely unknown.
"Groovin' Blue" was his second album for the Pacific Jazz label in 1961. Together with the equally criminally underrated drummer Frank Butler, he led a finely cast sextet through a program of soulful West Coast jazz originals.
