For the recordings made in 1965, the tenor saxophonist assembled a first-rate quintet featuring Lee Morgan on trumpet, Harold Mabern Jr. on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The six tracks showcase Mobley’s enormous range, spanning from boogaloo and bossa nova to ballads and gripping hard bop. Highlights include the funky opener “The Dip,” the driving, modally tinged “The Vamp,” the Brazilian-inspired “Recado Bossa Nova,” and the beautiful ballad “I See Your Face Before Me.” A Blue Note classic from Mobley’s heyday that is as versatile as it is immediately accessible.
With “Dippin’,” a highlight from Hank Mobley’s outstanding creative phase in the mid-1960s is now available in the Blue Note Tone Poet series.
