I Am Not Lambert [CD]

With "I Am Not Lambert", Lambert 2026 makes an impressive return - and once again raises the question of identity, staging and artistic truth. The Berlin-based pianist, composer and producer from Hamburg, who made the contemporary classical music scene sit up and take notice with his self-titled debut in 2014, has never been easy to categorize. Too versatile, too idiosyncratic, too much of a border crosser between neoclassical, pop, electronic and experimental music.

Even the cover of the new album is a statement: Lambert takes off his iconic mask. But what becomes visible underneath is not a simple "unveiling", but rather another game with projection and persona. The title "I Am Not Lambert" seems like a paradox, a deliberate tactic of confusion. Perhaps it is, as it seems: the most honest lie he has ever told.

Musically, Lambert opens up more than ever. For the first time, vocal features (Dekker, Kat Frankie, Ralph Heidel, Marie-Claire Schlameus, etc.) come clearly to the fore, and he even sings himself on the first single "Spirit". This expansion lends his sound cosmos a new directness. Where previous albums were often characterized by instrumental introspection, a dialogue is created here - between voice and piano, between electronics and organic warmth, between intimacy and pop appeal. The piano remains the emotional center, but it is surrounded by beats, textures and voices that give the album a surprising dynamic.
