Clark's 12 new tracks are an adventurous but equally coherent synthesis of his eclectic musical universe. With his samples of tunes by Thelonious Monk and Sonny Boy Williamson, world music and even jazz influences fuse with rock, R&B, hip-hop and blues. Gary Clark Jr. may have long been known for such experiments, but with "Jpeg Raw" he has created a fresh, new style.

Clark's lyrics are pointed, deeply personal, blunt and socially conscious, with occasional forays into rap and spoken word from Clark himself. The sound is haunting and veers towards modern, groove-oriented psychedelia with hip-hop driven beats in the verses giving way to anthemic choruses rich with power chords and broad fuzz riffs.

"JPEG RAW" is Clark's first album since 2019's critically acclaimed "This Land," which landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart for the third consecutive year and won three Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance ("This Land") and Best Contemporary Blues Album ("This Land"). Clark's first Grammy win was in 2014 for Best Traditional R&B Performance ("Please Come Home").
