When Lee Morgan entered the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs on April 28, 1960 to record "Lee-Way", he had not recorded a Blue Note session for more than two years. What emerged that day was a hard bop album in a class of its own, like a reunion party of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. With only four tracks on the album - all originals, including Morgan's "The Lion and the Wolf", a rousing tribute to the two Blue Note founders Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff - each musician had plenty of room to develop freely and realize their ideas.
