Like Cartoon Vampires [LP]

On their second album as The Convenience, "Like Cartoon Vampires", multi-instrumentalists Nick Corson and Duncan Troast from New Orleans focus on a hypnotic physicality and a collage-like, spontaneous compositional approach.

The result is an avant-garde soundscape, peppered with spidery, atonal guitar work, spiky rhythms and shrill feedback, which may seem like a complete reinvention after the sugary-sweet funk-pop of their debut album Accelerator from 2021. On their second LP, following their inspiration meant creating much more with their hands than with knobs or switches. The sessions were characterized by gnarly, improvised jams where they played around with cassette loops, found sounds and 808s.

Tracks like "Target Offer" and "Fake the Feeling" shake with ear-splitting guitar feedback, while "Pray'r" and "Rats" abandon their cult of groove in favor of haunting minimalism. Song for song, Accelerator's pop influences are exchanged for more eccentric borderlands, with the common denominator of the duo's first two albums being their captivating, funky instincts and mastery of textures.

Lyrically, Like Cartoon Vampires gathers messages from a dying empire - characters consumed by alienation and vanity without society batting an eyelid. But make no mistake, these songs aren't just disaffected ennui - music-making and collaboration are intense emotional practices for The Convenience, and they reflect a screaming lust for life.
