Leonard Bernstein's recording of Beethoven's String Quartet op. 131 with the Vienna Philharmonic is characterized by its strong contrast. In the central variation movement, Bernstein chooses a significantly slower tempo, creating an intense and concentrated atmosphere of expression, while the faster movements gain in sharpness and momentum. The strings of the Vienna Philharmonic bring their famous sound and character to the performance, making this interpretation a distinctive and highly captivating performance. This recording has been remastered for the first time and cut from the original 1-inch 8-track tapes. Bernstein dedicated this recording to the memory of his wife Felicia Montealegre Bernstein.
