Beck's official debut album "Mellow Gold" from 1994, which emerged just as alternative rock was becoming mainstream, surprised expectations when "Loser" transformed from a rejected demo into a ubiquitous hit. "Loser" showcased Beck's unconventional approach to songwriting and solidified his status as an innovative voice in alternative music. The song features a sample from "I Walk on Guilded Splinters" by Dr. John.
"Mellow Gold" was produced by Beck, Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf and Karl Stephenson. The album was mixed by Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf.
