In the fifth chapter of the series, entitled "Mellow Mood", Oscar Peterson returns to his trio line-up with Sam Jones (b) and Bob Durham (dr) after Vol. 4, which was a solo effort. It is an album on which the Canadian celebrates the giants of US jazz in several pieces. He starts with Duke Ellington's "In A Mellotone", which he interprets in a variety of ways and with exuberant physicality.

He leads the Horace Silver composition "Nica's Dream" from lyrical contence to improvisational effervescence, and he plays Gershwin's "Summertime" in a version that is, in his own words, "bold" and completely liberated from the melancholy melos. In "On Green Dolphin Street", he takes up a theme from the film of the same name, unfolding his prancing keyboard passages over Jones' drone, who also delivers a wonderful solo towards the end. With the concluding pieces, he spans a wide time frame: "Sometimes I'm Happy" takes us back to the innocence of the twenties, while "Who Can I Turn To" dates back to the sixties. Peterson has already recorded it for his solo album, here it is worked out in a trio structure after an astonishing change of tempo.
