"My Favorite Things" is a key element in Coltrane's discography. He had already recorded a few records for Atlantic Records, but these had been made with acquired musicians and featured 'Trane in the accepted hardbop genre, although he was making great strides with his playing and harmonic searching.

Here, however, the first album was recorded with his new musicians McCoy Tyner and Elvin J1s (Steve Davis, although perfectly capable of being only the first in a series of bassists with whom Coltrane made his way before meeting Jimmy Garrison).

The music created for this album in late 1960 was fundamentally different from what had preceded it as Coltrane forged his own path, first with his last collaborator Miles Davis
