New York Dolls [CD]

Along with the Stooges, the New York Dolls were instrumental in pioneering the sound and attitude of punk, and this, their self-titled debut, is one of the founding documents of post-'60s rock.

Boisterous, chaotic and full of energy, the Dolls borrowed from the upbeat, bluesy swagger of the Rolling Stones, the pop confections of Phil Spector and the campy theatricality that blossomed with the glam movement, fusing it all with an immediate impact reminiscent of the thrust of early rock'n'roll.

They were one of the major influences on punk - indeed, Malcolm McClaren was briefly manager - and formed Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers, who supported the Pistols on the Anarchy tour.
