One Battle After Another [CD]

Nonesuch releases the music by Oscar and BAFTA-nominated composer Jonny Greenwood for Paul Thomas Anderson's new feature film "One Battle After Another". Jonny Greenwood is best known as the lead guitarist of the band Radiohead. The album features eighteen new compositions performed by Greenwood on piano, guitar, bass, drums and ondes martenot, together with the London Contemporary Orchestra and conductor Hugh Brunt. "One Battle After Another" was written, directed and produced by Paul Thomas Anderson. It stars Oscar and BAFTA winners Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro as well as Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti.

"One Battle After Another" is Greenwood's sixth film score for Paul Thomas Anderson released on Nonesuch. Previous recordings include the soundtracks to "Phantom Thread", "Junun", "Inherent Vice", "The Master" and "There Will Be Blood". Nonesuch has also released "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" / "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" / "Polymorphia" / "48 Responses to Polymorphia", the soundtrack to Tran Anh Hung's film "Norwegian Wood", his collaboration with Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki and his interpretation of Steve Reich's "Electric Counterpoint".

A (musical) theme like a poem: Jonny Greenwood's idea for the main theme of "One Battle After Another" combines longing, radicalism and excitement. Greenwood's unconventional but masterful music has been a wonderful accompaniment to Paul Thomas Anderson's films for decades. Like Anderson's images, Greenwood's sounds range from humor to agony. Greenwood lets pianos hammer, strings melt (and ache), percussion irritate; he composes flutes and guitars to go with it. The result is a congenial addition to the movie. (For the jury: Jenni Zylka)
