With *Zwielicht*, Deutsche Grammophon expands Matthias Goerne’s successful song series with a Schumann program of great artistic depth. Together with pianist Markus Hinterhäuser, Goerne performs the *Liederkreis*, Op. 39, based on Eichendorff, selected songs from *Der Harfner*, and the poems of Queen Mary Stuart.
The recording brings together three groups of works from different phases of Schumann’s career, thus tracing an impressive arc from the “Year of the Lied” (1840) to the late, existentially intense lieder of 1852. Goerne and Hinterhäuser have already performed this repertoire on major stages such as the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Prinzregententheater in Munich.
For Deutsche Grammophon, *Zwielicht* also represents a logical continuation of the artistic profile that Matthias Goerne has consistently shaped in recent years with his high-caliber lieder recordings. The combination of a prominent artistic personality, an established lieder duo, and a canonical repertoire makes this album one of the most significant new releases in the classical music program for the summer of 2026.
