Level 42's most successful album: "Running In The Family" is the British jazz-funk-pop band's bestseller. Everyone over 30 knows the lead single "Lessons In Love" from the album, which spent over fifty weeks in the British charts in 1987-88.

If the 1985 album World Machine kept Level 42 on the cusp of stardom, Running In The Family turned them into arena-filling superstars, astonishing for a group that was more Mahavishnu Orchestra than Dire Straits at its core. The success is astonishing for an album that came about by chance: in early 1986, "Something About You" had landed in the Top 10 in the USA and Level 42 spent a lot of time there. Polydor asked the group to write new singles to promote in the UK, and so Mark King went into his home studio and recorded "Lessons In Love"; a song that began the process of the album.

It quickly became clear that "Lessons In Love" was going to be a hit. And it did, becoming the group's biggest international success. When recording officially began with the new song "Running In The Family", it was clear that they had a follow-up and title track for their next album. Released in March 1987, Running In The Family entered the UK charts at No. 2 and stayed in the lists for over a year, as subsequent singles "To Be With You Again", the touching ballad "It's Over" and "Children Say" kept the album's profile high. The group's populist jazz-funk-pop was at its peak; the electric dance track "Fashion Fever" and the buoyant "Two Solitudes" added to this commercial sound.
