"Bookends" forms something like the centerpiece of the album, which will be released on June 20. The sprawling ballad pays tribute to her late friend Riley Gale, former lead singer of the band Power Trip. It is also inspired by John Carey's book "Eyewitness To History", a collection of over 300 historical eyewitness accounts of defining events in human history.
"Bookends" is accompanied by a video by Caity Arthur. "The video is about death and absolution, how death is one of the few sure things in life, the great equalizer, nolens volens," says Arthur. "But it also subverts the traditional narrative of death as a desperate void and instead portrays it with its hallucinogenic sixties ensemble as a euphoric transitional experience complete with TV pop performance and sleight of hand, while Meg's lyrics invoke death in all its forms." For "Scratch It", Meg Remy put together a band with guitarist Dillon Watson - originally for a one-off festival appearance, but due to the good chemistry, eventually for an entire album.
With Watson on guitar, Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, Loretta Lynn) on bass, Domo Donoho on drums and Jo Schornikow and Tina Norwood on keys, "Scratch It" was created within ten days in Nashville. In between, harmonica legend Charlie McCoy, who had already worked with Elvis, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbinson, also dropped by and contributed his skills to some of the songs.
The authenticity of the analog-produced songs is immediate, a testament to the chemistry between all involved, Remy sounds more relaxed than ever before. The album interweaves country, gospel, garage rock, soul, disco and folk, while Remy's lyrics deal with Patti Smith, young love, motherhood, power dynamics, the power of James Brown, deceased companions, the Yukon gold rush - or her own after a tequila-soaked night. As always, she also brings her biting humor to bear.
