Venom are an English extreme metal band formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1979. Venom's first two albums - Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982) - came to prominence towards the end of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and are generally considered to be a major influence on the thrash metal and extreme metal genres. Venom's second album, Black Metal, proved influential enough to be used as the name for the henceforth eponymous extreme metal subgenre

The classic line-up of the band trio consisting of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon, recorded two more studio albums At War With Satan (1984) and Possessed (1985) as well as the live album Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (1986). Often cited by bands like Metallica, Behemoth, Celtic Frost and Mayhem as major influences, they are one of the most revered bands of their generation. Venom is still led by original vocalist / bassist Cronos, headlining festivals worldwide and continuing to release new music
