The Headhunters began as Herbie Hancock's backing band for groundbreaking funk-jazz albums such as "Thrust" and "Man Child". When Herbie Hancock moved on to other things in 1975, the Headhunters decided to carry on without him. "The Survival Of The Fittest" is a very solid, complex funk-jazz album that tends towards fusion. Thanks to their ultra-technical drummer Mike Clark, The Headhunters' funk is jazzy and abstract in a style where the beat is constantly spinning and shifting in unpredictable directions.
An interesting track is "Rima" where the guys, led by the excellent composer and woodwind player Bennie Maupin, leave the funk aside for a bit and engage in an extended tone poem of woodwinds and electronics. Another standout track is the album's opener, "God Make Me Funky (Feat. the Pointer Sisters)," which has been heavily sampled in hip-hop and has become a cornerstone of many classic songs by hip-hop greats like 2Pac, N.W.A., De La Soul, Eric B. & Rakim, Nas, DMX, Usher, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and the Beastie Boys, to name a few. The album closes with "If You've Got it, You'll Get it", where Blackbyrd is given space for an extended acid rock/jazz fusion solo reminiscent of the great Pete Cosey.
