Skyclad are regarded as one of the co-founders of the folk metal genre. They were founded in 1990 by former Sabbath singer Martin Walkyier and Satan/Pariah guitarist Steve Ramsey. Their goal was to put together the "ultimate Pagan Metal Band", which was joined by former Pariah bassist Graeme English and drummer Keith Baxter
After signing a record deal with Noise, the first result of this collaboration was the 1991 album "The Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth". For the following "A Burnt Offering For The Bone Idol" (1992) the band was completed by the violinist and keyboarder Fritha Jenkins and a second guitarist Dave Pugh in order to achieve a more folk-like sound, which was refined on the following "Jonah's Ark" (1993)
The "Prince Of The Poverty Line" released in 1994 is considered a milestone in folk metal. With "The Silent Whales Of Lunar Sea" Skyclad toured in 1995 as support for Black Sabbath, but it also marked the end of their collaboration with Noise and Martin Walkyier left the band a few years later. But Skyclad are still active with a new line-up and released eight more albums from 1996 until today
