On her kaleidoscopic second album "The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life", Debby Friday defines success in her own way. "I want to be a star, I can't hide that desire," she says, "but I don't want to live someone else's dream or follow a predetermined path."

For the Nigerian-Canadian polymath, being a Starrr means living in the extremes: public or private, hubris or humility, flying or falling. Being a Starrr means embracing the apocalyptic hedonism of an all-night rave - and finding community in the "dark room, girl in line for the restroom" in the buzzing house anthem "All I Wanna Do Is Party." It means trading lines over bottles on ice with Detroit techno prodigies HiTech in "In The Club" and freaking out on the dancefloor while admitting she's "barely on the dancefloor these days". It's the sound of discovery, what comes after success that most artists only dream of - how to burn bright without burning out.

In 11 songs, "The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life" showcases Freitag's chameleon-like vocals. From the sparse, breathy beauty of the lovelorn "Leave" to the driving post-punk of "Darker The Better". Winning the 2023 Polaris Prize for her debut album GOOD LUCK has only spurred Debby Friday on even more: "I'm tryna see more/ Man, I want the payoff" she raps over laser-like synthesizers on the effortlessly copied kiss-off "Lipsync".
