Mahavishnu Orchestra is considered one of the most important jazz rock/fusion bands of the 1970s. The band was founded in 1971 by John McLaughlin. In addition to McLaughlin (guitar), the band featured Jerry Goodman (violin), Jan Hammer (keyboards), Rick Laird (electric bass) and Billy Cobham (drums).

The lineup changed again and again, but the band still managed to achieve great importance. Their 1975 album Visions of the Emerald Beyond is a more accessible work, consisting of shorter jazz-rock tracks. The songs are interconnected and were influenced by the funk music of the time. Fast fusion tracks alternate with shorter pieces.

The album is characterized by haunting guitar riffs and beautiful piano and violin melodies. Visions of the Emerald Beyond is a magnificent musical work of jazz virtuosity at the highest level. The Mahavishnu Orchestra has often been cited as a great influence on other musicians of the era. Artists such as King Crimson, Frank Zappa and The Mars Volta are among the Mahavishnu Orchestra's avowed admirers.
