After moving from Detroit to New York in 1957, trombonist Curtis Fuller quickly became a fixture on the Blue Note scene and contributed to John Coltrane’s legendary album *Blue Train*, among other projects. In December of that same year, “Vol. 3” was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Hackensack—Fuller’s third Blue Note session as bandleader. He is accompanied by Art Farmer on trumpet, Sonny Clark on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums.

The album showcases Fuller’s warm, fluid trombone tone and his flair as a composer: from “Little Messenger,” inspired by Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, to the Afro-Cuban rhythms of “Quantrale,” and on to the expansive “Carvon.” The album finally comes to a gentle close with a sensitive interpretation of “It’s Too Late Now.” A swinging, multifaceted document from the early stages of an extraordinary career.

Blue Note Tone Poet Edition: Stereo, produced by Joe Harley, fully analog remastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, RTI pressing (180g), sturdy tip-on gatefold sleeve, padded inner sleeve.
