When producer Creed Taylor launched his CTI label at the end of the 1960s, it was clear that his "buddy" Quincy Jones had to be part of the line-up. The album "Walking in Space" was released in 1969 and was one of Quincy's first steps in the direction of soul and black music.
Singer Valerie Simpson shines on the psychedelic title track from the rock musical "Hair", an epic version of Benny Golson's "Killer Joe" with Ray Brown on bass and Grady Tate on drums has long been one of Quincy's rare groove classics and Edwin Hawkins' gospel hit "Oh Happy Day" literally explodes with joie de vivre and musical timbres.
