"We Free Kings" is considered one of Roland Kirk's musically more coherent early works. Although the saxophonist and flautist recorded it in January 1961 with two different quartets, he achieved a wonderful balance between bebop numbers and more soulful pieces.
The repertoire underlines Kirk's abilities as a composer (seven of the nine pieces were written by him). His interpretation of Charlie Parker's "Blues For Alice" is also brilliant.
