It's no secret that Foals like to experiment with different genres. Even on their first three albums, it was difficult to assign them to a specific musical genre: Indie pop, techno, math rock, ambient, minimal - new audible influences were added with each record. This is also the case with the fourth: "What Went Down" is the band's 'heaviest' album to date.
However, this does not mean that other musical demands are not made on it. In fact, according to their own statements, the album is also the Brits' poppiest work to date. All in all, they remain true to their sound.
Nevertheless, the title and opening song "What Went Down" already makes a clear statement: Foals are back and serious. Hard guitar riffs, pulsating drums and singer Yannis Philippakis, who jumps back and forth between singing, shouting and screaming - many indicators of explosive indie rock.
For the recording, the band therefore enlisted the help of someone who knows exactly what he's talking about: James Ford, an experienced indie rocker himself, had previously produced the Arctic Monkeys and the Klaxons. At the beginning of 2015, they spent two months with him in the south of France in the studio 'La Fabrique', where Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds had already recorded their album "Push The Sky Away".
