Jan Akkerman (b. 1946) stands out as a unique figure in the world of rock and beyond. A Dutch guitarist of unparalleled versatility, he gained international recognition when he topped the prestigious Melody Maker readers' poll in 1973, beating icons such as Eric Clapton (2nd), Jimmy Page (5th) and Carlos Santana (10th). His fame, however, has never defined his art. For Akkerman, it's always been about the music - any genre, as long as it touches. He is a lifelong improviser who approaches every concert as a new adventure. Akkerman first came to prominence with Focus, a band that embodied the great instrumental spirit of 70s rock.

Whether he shares the stage with legends or newcomers, his spontaneous creativity makes every concert unique - a masterclass in musical freedom. Jan Akkerman remains a reference point for guitarists and fans, an authentic improviser whose name still evokes the same reaction from every seasoned Dutch rock fan: "He's the best guitarist in the world.

The North Sea Jazz Concert Series includes officially licensed releases, which come standard on 180-gram white vinyl, in a heavyweight inside-out cardboard cover. The albums feature mostly black and white artwork by Hans Pol, inspired by classic jazz covers from the Blue Note label. The liner notes are by journalist and jazz expert Jeroen de Valk. For all recordings, this is the first time they have been released on vinyl!
