A lot has happened since their last album from 2009, at least as far as their line-up is concerned: "Repentless" is the first Slayer album with Gary Holt from Exodus on guitar. He replaces Jeff Hanneman, who passed away in 2013. Also back is drummer Paul Bostaph, who was last heard on 2001's "God Hates Us All". The rest of the crew remains unchanged: Tom Araya sings and plays bass, Kerry King plays second guitar.
The word "repentless" comes from the English word "unrepentant" and means 'unrepentant' - which is exactly what the album's title track is about. According to Kerry King, the song is a tribute to her friend Jeff Hanneman and depicts life from his perspective. This attitude to life is also evident in the structure of the song, because "Repentless" is one thing above all: fast. Driving guitars, raging drums and lyrics shot out of a cannon - "Repentless" goes straight to the front.
The second single on the album follows on musically from the first. "Cast The First Stone" was also written by King, who is responsible for the majority of the songs on "Repentless".
In addition to King, Hanneman has also left his songwriting mark on the album. "Piano Wire" was penned by the deceased band member and was supposed to appear on the predecessor "World Painted Blood". However, the song was not yet complete, which is why it has only now ended up on the new album after being reworked.
