At the end of 1987, Slayer began work on their fourth studio album. Hanneman comments: "We knew we couldn't top Reign in Blood, so we had to slow down. We knew that everything we did would be compared to that album, and I remember we actually talked about slowing down. It was weird - we'd never done that on an album before or since."
South of Heaven was Slayer's most commercially successful release to date, debuting at #57 on the Billboard 200 and was their second album to go gold in the United States.
