Horace Silver's first tour of Japan in early 1962 left a deep impression on the pianist. As soon as he returned home, he set about writing a series of pieces in which he tried to combine "a Japanese feeling in the melodies with a Latin American feeling in the rhythms". He dedicated the album "The Tokyo Blues", recorded with his quintet in July of the same year, to his ardent new fans in Japan.
