Not long after "Strong Persuader" became an unexpected crossover hit in 1986 - which was hard to imagine then and seems almost impossible now - Cray decided he'd rather follow the sound of Stax and Hi Soul than be a full-fledged bluesman. He punctuated his songs with stinging licks not unlike Albert King, but the sound was closer to O. V. Wright. But what really sets Cray apart from his forebears is that he didn't get dirty and gritty, but remained classy and tasteful.
After 25 years and 14 albums, Robert Cray has spent more than two-thirds of his career playing the same understated, smooth Memphis soul-blues groove. He has found his sound and stayed true to it.
"Twenty", his 14th album, is now available on vinyl for the first time. It is a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience and has just the right ingredients. "Twenty" is released in a limited, numbered edition of 750 copies on crystal-clear 180-gram vinyl and includes an insert.
