The time has come. Coldplay are back with album number six, "Ghost Stories". in 2012, they toured the world with their fifth album "Mylo Xyloto". They then recorded the new album in their own studios in London until the beginning of 2014.
The two pre-released singles "Midnight" (February 2014) and "Magic" (April 2014) reveal a changed sound. In contrast to the instrumental complexity of "Mylo Xyloto", the quartet present a reduced, typical Coldplay sound with "Ghost Stories". The previously known ghost stories have a wistfully melancholic feel.
In Culver City, California, "Ghost Stories" was performed live for the first time in front of a select audience at the end of March 2014. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin greeted the audience with the words: "Welcome to my stand-up comedy show." With this sentence, he poses a riddle that fits in with the ghost stories: Are we supposed to laugh at him? Certainly not, because he is a sad hero. In "Magic" and "Ink" he sings about difficult, painful love. Songs like "Oceans" really demand a lot from his voice.
The comparison with the stand-up artist on stage fits so well because Chris Martin is the lynchpin of the record. In "Ghost Stories", he embodies the mostly sad love hero on behalf of the whole band, and not just in the video for "Magic". The listener's identification with the ghost stories told stands and falls with the voice of the lead singer, who shows just how versatile he is here. He gives his all and draws us into the stories of the Coldplay album. It's fun to get involved.
From the piano ballad "O" to musically lighter songs such as "True Love", "Ghost Stories" offers plenty of room for interpretation of the heart-wrenching empty spaces in the stories. And this is precisely what makes the band so appealing, as is their versatile sound. Fortunately, one thing remains certain: it's Coldplay, as lively and inspiring as ever. Devoted guitar sounds and an elegant evening of songs about love - that's how the Rolling Stone reviewer describes the evening of the album's live premiere.
